Medical professionals in the Anesthesiology department have diverse roles and responsibilities. From basic investigations to advanced clinical projects that have a direct impact on the well-being of the patient.

Anesthesia is by definition a treatment using drugs called anesthetics. The anesthetics numb you from feeling pain during any medical procedure, be it a minor or major surgery. The doctors who administer these drugs are called Anesthesiologists. General anesthesia makes you fall asleep/makes you unconscious during invasive surgeries and administering some anesthesia makes the area in and around the incision numb.

Anesthesia temporarily blocks the pain signals from travelling from nerves to the brain. The peripheral nerves are the ones that connect the spinal cord to the rest of the body.

An Anesthesiologist:

• Administers either one type or a combination of anesthetics during pain therapy or as an anti-nausea medication.
• Monitors vitals like BP, blood-O2 level, pulse and heart rate.
• Performs diagnosis and manages allergies or a sudden change in vitals.
• Administers post-surgical pain management.

It takes 24 hours or less for the effect of anesthesia to wear off, as it all depends on the type of anesthesia administered and how it is given. You may experience the following side effects:

• Back pain
• Muscle pain
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Itching
• Sore throat
• Tenderness or bruising at the site where anesthesia was injected.
• Hypothermia
